UN Hands Over 15 Logistics Trailers to MoTL and EDRMC in Dire Dawa

Dire Dawa, Ethiopia – The World Food Programme (WFP) officially handed over 15 logistics trailers to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics (MoTL) and the Ethiopian Disaster and Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) during a ceremony held in Dire Dawa, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Ethiopia’s national logistics capacity.

During the event, WFP formally handed over 10 trailers to MoTL and 5 trailers to EDRMC, representing a total investment of approximately USD 250,174.65, with each trailer valued at USD 16,678.31.

The handover symbolized the strong partnership between WFP and government institutions and reflected a shared commitment to enhancing Ethiopia’s logistics and transport systems. 

“This support underscores WFP’s dedication to working with government counterparts to strengthen resilient logistics systems that enable efficient, reliable service delivery,” Said Ms. Clara Silva, Head of Supply chain for WFP Ethiopia. “By reinforcing the national logistics backbone, we are collectively investing in Ethiopia’s capacity to respond to emergencies, sustain development efforts, and serve communities across the country.” 

The donation is expected to contribute to improving transportation and logistics operations for both MoTL and EDRMC, particularly in supporting last mile delivery of  humanitarian and development operations, as well as broader national logistics coordination.

Speaking at the handover event, H.E. Ato Dhenge Boru, State Minister of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, emphasized the critical role of supply chains in both food security and humanitarian assistance. “Whether for food security or humanitarian response, the supply chain is vital. One of the key bottlenecks we are working to address is last‑mile delivery,” he said. “These trailers will be instrumental in helping us overcome last‑mile logistics challenges.”

The handover also emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration among WFP, MoTL, and EDRMC. Such partnerships were highlighted as a cornerstone for long-term progress and institutional capacity building.

WFP expressed its sincere appreciation to H.E. Ato Dhenge Boru, State Minister of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, and Mr. Firaol Tafa, Deputy Director General of the Ethiopian Maritime Authority (EMA), representatives from EDRMC and all distinguished officials for their presence and leadership, underscoring the shared responsibility of strengthening national systems.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from all parties to continue fostering cooperation and ensuring that the donated trailers serve not only as operational assets but also as a symbol of effective partnership in advancing Ethiopia’s logistics capacity.
