World Autism Awareness Day

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am honored to be among you today to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day. I extend my sincere gratitude to the Melué Foundation for inviting me to share in this significant occasion alongside representatives from government, civil society organizations, the private sector, and individual supporters who tirelessly work to enhance the lives of individuals with autism.

The designation of April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations General Assembly underscores the global commitment to advocating for improved quality of life for individuals with autism, enabling them to thrive as valued members of society.

Autism, a lifelong neurological condition, manifests early in childhood and transcends gender, race, and socio-economic status. Alarmingly, reports indicate high rates of autism worldwide, yet a pervasive lack of understanding persists, resulting in profound impacts on individuals, families, and communities.

Addressing the stigma and discrimination associated with neurological differences is imperative. This demands collective action from government entities, civil society, media, communities, and families of individuals with autism.

By adopting the 2030 Agenda, UN Member States pledged to leave no one behind in the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals embody the commitment to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of background, can fulfill their potential and lead dignified lives in a supportive environment.

Realizing an inclusive society necessitates upholding the fundamental rights outlined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, including those with autism. Despite challenges, including limited awareness and resources, we must strive for attitudinal shifts, policy support, and robust engagement from all stakeholders, including the private sector, to facilitate the integration of individuals with autism into society.

Recognizing the unique talents of individuals on the autism spectrum and providing them with adequate support fosters equal opportunity and meaningful participation in society. Our collective efforts, whether as individuals or institutions, hold the power to transform mindsets and positively impact the lives of individuals with autism and their families.

I commend Ms. Tigist Hailu for her visionary leadership in establishing the Melué Foundation, offering hope to countless children, parents, and families affected by autism.

As we observe World Autism Awareness Day, let us unite to raise public awareness, empower parents to seek early intervention services, and advocate for the full inclusion of individuals with autism in society. Together, let us create an environment where individuals with autism can flourish and contribute to a future that is equitable and sustainable for all.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Melué Foundation, government representatives, the private sector, local and international organizations, families of individuals with autism, and all participants for their unwavering support in realizing the potential of individuals with autism and promoting their full participation in society.
