UNOPS and the Ethiopia Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) have signed a $4.5 million project agreement to procure modern agriculture machinery. This project will significantly enhance EIAR’s research capabilities and mechanization capacity, aligning with its mission to strengthen Ethiopia’s agricultural sector through innovative research and advanced mechanization.
The procurement of advanced machinery will improve the efficiency and precision of agricultural trials, minimize the environmental impact of farming practices and accelerate the development of sustainable, high-yield agricultural methods.
As part of the project, UNOPS will procure 21 Heavy-Duty Tractors, two Combine Harvesters and one Maize Combine Harvester. Ms. Worknesh Mekonnen, Director of the Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office of UNOPS, stated: “Through sustainable procurement, we will ensure that every dollar spent aligns with our values, promoting environmental stewardship, and long-term economic vitality”.
The agreement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of EIAR and its key partner, the World Bank, demonstrating their shared commitment to advancing agricultural research and innovation in Ethiopia
