Young voices at the forefront: UN engages with youth on building and shaping the future

UN Country Team in Ethiopia engages with the youth as part of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
In a vibrant and inspiring gathering to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, young people from across Ethiopia came together with UN leaders, partners, and civil society for a powerful Youth Forum under the theme “Building the Future Together.”
Organized by the United Nations Country Team in Ethiopia in partnership with Seket Africa and the United Nations Association, the Forum celebrated not just a milestone in UN history, but a renewed commitment to youth inclusion, innovation, and leadership in shaping a better world.
Speaking at the event, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator a.i. emphasized the foundational role of the UN as a force for peace, development, and human rights since its creation in 1945. “Ethiopia was among the founding members of the United Nations, and it continues to champion global cooperation and solidarity. But today, as we face new and complex challenges—from climate change to digital transformation—we must turn to you, the youth, as key partners in progress,” she said.

The event highlighted the indispensable role young people are already playing across sectors in Ethiopia—from agriculture and climate action to education and technology. “You are not waiting for permission. You are already leading, and we are here to support you,” the UN Coordinator affirmed.
Echoing this message, the UNAIDS Country Director and Chair of the UN Communications Group, Ms. Krittayawan Boonto, emphasized that youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but also of today. “Your generation is launching businesses, driving social change, reimagining our future. This Forum is an opportunity to listen, learn, and co-create solutions with you,” she said.
Participants engaged in dynamic discussions on education, employment, digital inclusion, gender equality, and environmental resilience. The presence of members of the UN Country Team reinforced the UN’s commitment to ongoing, meaningful youth engagement—not as a one-time event, but as a continuous dialogue.

The forum also served as a reminder that the future is not a distant goal, but a shared project in motion. “Let’s make a promise—not just to celebrate the UN’s past, but to shape its future together,” urged the UN leadership.
As the world marks 80 years since the founding of the United Nations, the message from Ethiopia’s youth is clear: they are ready, they are leading, and they are eager to work hand-in-hand to build a peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future—for everyone, everywhere.
